Covered in the Portable Appliance Test.
Visual inspection of cables, plugs and/or sockets for physical damage, heat damage and general wear and tear. Checking security of cable within plug and appliance.
Visual Inspection of equipment e.g. Check casing for cracks etc.
If Plug is not sealed a check inside to inspect internal wiring and fuse.
Check the fuse type and rating. When ‘normal’ repairs are done by unqualified users, the quickest fix will normally be applied. Quick fix is normally put a new fuse in. Normal plugs and fuses are 13 amps. This may be to high for the equipment in use and offers no protection to the equipment it is fitted into or the user.
A good rule of thumb.
If power is stated as below 700 watts (700w) then fit a 3 amp fuse.
If power is above 700 then 13 amps.
Please note these are a rough guide. When we inspect we will put the correct size for the wattage.
Depending on the category of the equipment the test we do are:-
Earth Continuity
Insulation
Polarity
Leakage Test
Basically
Continuity = Making sure the root to earth (protection) is good.
Insulation = Making sure the other core’s ( and personnel ) of the cables are not shorting.
If the wrong fuse is fitted we will replace free of charge.
If the connections are incorrect, e.g. to much bare wire showing we will fix free of charge.
If the cable is incorrectly gripped or bridge is damaged, we will fix free of charge.
We will leave you with your certificate of completion for the Health & Safety Inspector or Local Government Enforcement Officer.
A list of all items that have passed, and a list and reason of why any particular appliance failed.
If required, we can put right any failures for a small additional cost to cover materials used, i.e. new plug, extension cables etc.
